Program: A.L.I.C.E. (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed)
Presentors: Ed Bonilla, Dawn Parker, Lauren Ashe, and Jim Crawford, explained the financial hardship of many people in our state. In Connecticut, 1 in 4 households have earnings above the Federal Poverty Level but below a basic cost of living threshold. Despite working hard, these households struggle to make ends meet. United Way calls this newly identified demographic ALICE. Combined, ALICE and Poverty households comprise 35% of all households in the state, revealing that more than 1 in 3 Connecticut households is experiencing financial hardship. In Old Saybrook the number is 25%, Westbrook is 33%, and Old Lyme is 21%. You can help ALICE by contacting your local United Way to volunteer to help ALICE households or by giving to United Way's Community
Impact Fund. This certainly was an eye opening presentation.
