Happy Bucks: Many for the students, parents, teachers, and guests; Ed –for his upcoming cruise, some for the “warm” weather, several for their favorite science teacher.

Program: Student of the Month – Science

        Superintendent Jan Perruccio conducted the program. She introduced the students and faculty representatives from each school and gave an overview of the Student of the Month Program.

        Old Saybrook High School: Associate Principal, Joe Anastasio, and science teacher, Amber Scherber, described Jonah Nucci as a kind leader with a passion for learning. He has been recognized as an AP Scholar, participated in an internship at Yale, is a two sport athlete, and is involved in student government. Jonah plans on being an engineering major (maybe Med. School) in the fall.

        Lyme/Old Lyme High School:  Associate Principal, Jeanne Manfredi, and teacher, Glenn Elliott, described Gabriel Stephen-Zumbaum as a humble student who leads by example. He is a scholar athlete that is involved with the Math Team, Quiz Bowl Team, and the Crew Team. Gabriel has received a nomination to West Point and has been accepted to several other colleges. He plans on studying petroleum engineering next year.

        Westbrook High School:  Principal, Tara Winch, and teacher, Alina Britchi, described Olivia Fabrizi as a student who exemplifies “service above self”. In class, she strives to be the best and always asks the question, Why? She has earned the top grade in UConn Biology and UConn Physics. Olivia will soon be completing the requirements for the Gold Award in Girl Scouting. She hopes to earn a degree in Environmental Sciences.

        The Math Student of the Month was recognized because she was unable to attend last month’s meeting. Tara Winch and teacher, Caitlin Rickaby described Tirzah Blomquist as an excellent student with a compassion for special education students. To that end, she has been involved in the Unified Sports Program. She is also highly involved in the school band, plays, and the musicals. Tirzah has not chosen a major but plans to study in North Carolina, where it is warm.

Announcements:  Marty updated the progress on the Wine Tasting Event (2/9) at Saybrook Point Inn. Please sell tickets, get sponsors, and check the donor sheet on the Rotary’s website.

Brent Taylor presented information about helping hurricane victims in the Houston, Texas area. The club voted to donate $5,000.00 to the Richmond Rotary Club to be used in a local relief effort. The Richmond will report to us as to where and how these funds were used.
