PROGRAM
Speaker this morning was Terri Eickel, Development & Special Events, Connecticut Cancer Foundation Old Saybrook, CT.
Connecticut Cancer Foundation was founded by John and Jane Ellis in 1987. John played professional baseball for several years, the Padres and a long stint with the Yankees. The Foundation began as The Connecticut Sports Foundation then changed to the present name.
John survived a bout with cancer while his two brothers and sister in law did not thus the Foundation began. The early fund raisers included nights of entertainment with Whitey ford, Mickey Mantle, and Billy Martin in attendance, quite a night. Present day events are Peer to Peer activities, Cycle for Cancer,(spinning), Fishing Tournaments, and the like. To date have dispensed over $5,000,000.00, last year $450,000.00.
The Ambassador program selects a recipient for funds and they receive 15-20% of the money raised. The funds are directed to assist folks with everyday expenses, rent, heat, food, electricity, etc.
When completed the home office will include and art gallery and a sports memorabilia room.
