Brents Report: The food booth netted about $2100 which is typical. Saturday was the busier day. We sold lots of hot dogs and cold beverages especially water. All the leftovers went to the Estuary. Stop & Shop donated much of what we sold so they deserve credit. Proceeds went to the Foundation which is a 501c3. Brent thanked everyone who came out and helped. Bob Antoniac was Brents right hand man! Special thanks to non-Rotarians like Johns wife and daughter and Sam's daughter.

Sam proposed to the club that we man an exclusive food booth on Sept. 29 for the annual Youth & Family Services event on the town green. The club voted to do it.

Program: Bill McLaughlin

Bill started out by reviewing the origins of Rotary International beginning with that fateful meeting called by Paul Harris in Chicago with a few other local businessmen. The concept of a service organization was born and since then has blossomed worldwide. There are 5 Avenues of Service: Vocational, International, Club Service, New Generations, and Community Service. Bill wants monthly reports from each avenue so start thinking about what you would like to accomplish, what has been accomplished and general direction and be prepared to present it to the club.
Bill gave a brief bio of himself, born and raised in Mondovi, WI. Bill attended the University of Wisconsin and studied Mining Engineering. Upon graduation, Bill took a job with Anaconda, a large mining company going at times a half mile down where it was very hot. Bill did other jobs after that and in Detroit met Rosemary his wife. They had 3 girls and in the mid 60s moved to Newington, CT. He came to Old Saybrook in 1970 and was the director of the Chamber of Commerce. Bill enjoys traveling with Rosemary in his motor home and seeing the country. Today he leaves for Denver.

CLUB SERVICE: Sergeant of Arms important, program schedules, website, welcoming guests and exchanging flags

VOCATIONAL SERVICE: Rev Ed spoke and said the club needs to educate the community to problems in the community. Rev Ed did a brief bio. Upon graduation from Notre Dame HS where he was taught to help make the world a better place, his family went into bankruptsy and lost everything including their home. Ed has 2 sons, a minister and the other is an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). Student of the Month World Affairs, Scholarships and RYLA are some of the things we do as a club to support Vocational Service.

INTERNATIONAL SERVICE: More is expected here.

Discussion ended here but the feeling is that if we can do more as a club through the Avenues, our profile will be raised which will attract new members.

Joe Arcari took the floor to talk about how important uniforms were in his military career. Joe is a strong advocate for the club wearing uniform clothing (shirts) when out in the community doing a function - it raises our profile and makes the wearer feel more like they are part of something good.
