Program: School in Ghana

John Donnelly introduced Bill Owen. Bill and his wife run a school in the town of Techiman, Ghana, Africa. In 2010 our club provided a grant to his school, the first global grant from Rotary. With the funds they purchased computers, servers and related items. A second grant helped fund sanitation. 17 bore holes were built and toilets installed. The newest focus will be for hospital upgrades. $1-$1.5 million went to the maternity ward expanding the number of incubators. More is needed for emergency services. Bill started a second school with help from his son who raised $3,000. Today, they have 2500 students and over 40 teachers. Financial support is greatly needed - the results have been excellent with kids going to college in a very competitive environment.

Other Business:
Brent spoke on the golf tournament tomorrow, all set for volunteers, shotgun start at 10AM. So far we have taken in $12K and paid out $500 - not the final net.

Charlie Norz: Dictionaries for the 3rd graders are all set and ready to go! Charlie has scheduled Nov 7 to distribute them to St. Johns and Goodwin in Old Saybrook and Daisy Ingraham School in Westbrook. Old Lyme will be the following day. Please let Charlie know if you'd like to participate. The kids and teachers really appreciate the dictionaries!

Charlie Norz: Charlie will be making contact with a Rotary Club in Wilmington, N. Carolina to offer some help after the devastation of Hurricane Florence. We sent help to Houston for Hurricane Harvey relief.

Jan Perruccio spoke about the Interact Club which is holding the Locks for Luke headshave event this weekend. Amber asked if they could use our new tent and if anyone could help from 3:30-6:30. Marty will bring the tent to the high school.

Brent announced that the annual H.E.A.T. fundraiser spaghetti dinner is Nov. 15. Matt Rubin heads this up and we support his efforts. Tickets are $10 - ask Brent.

Tara gave an update on Bill McLaughlin who had a biking accident. He is ok and on the mend.
