Program: Jamelle White, Girl Scouts of Connecticut
Jamelle spoke about the mission of Girl Scouts which includes promoting leadership. There are troops in the area and summer camp at Pattagansett Lake in E. Lyme. They are always looking for volunteers, 18 yrs and older including men. Volunteers may request an age group preference. Annual scout membership cost is $40 per year September to September. Different troops have different focuses including international projects. Girl Scout ideals include honest, caring, courageous and strong. They are taught first aid and survival skills (who to call, treating an injury, etc.) They are taught entrepreneur skills through sales of their famous cookie brands. Life skills are taught and a lot of what they do is done outdoors.
There are 6 recruiters in CT and several offices. Jamelle's office is in Hartford. There are 8 camps - each a little different. Activities include horseback riding, swimming and archery. High school age girls have leadership programs available to them.
If you know anyone who would like to volunteer or know of anyone who would like to join the Girl Scouts, contact Jamelle White: Email: jwhite@gsofct.org or call: 1 800-922-2770, ext. 3256
