Program: Ana M. Gopoian, TriCircle, Inc. Founder & Executive Director
Rev Ed introduced Ana who spoke about her organization. Ed pointed out a recent statistic made public that over 79 billion opiates were dispensed in the US last year. Addiction is a growing problem in the US and the cost has been great with many lives lost. This crisis touches everyone in one way or another. A TCI representative spoke to the students of Old Saybrook High School and to the parents of a student for the Old Saybrook Youth and Family Services.  TriCircle is an organization of people helping people and has been effective in getting treatment to those addicted. Based in Wallingford, CT, their support groups are available in places like First Church of Christ, the library and more. Groups out of town can be attended as well. The work with the Valley Shore Prevention Council and Youth & Family Services. The club supports TriCircle. The organization was started June 2016 and is sustained by fundraisers and donations.

Ana has been in recovery for 24 years, Al 35 years. TriCircle is not just about drug addiction. Any addiction can be transferred to a different addiction (sex, alcohol, smoking, gambling, etc.) The brain chemistry determines addiction potential which can be influenced by genetics. They have counselors, a mental health professional, as well as a paraprofessional on staff and available when needed. Mentoring is important to keep people engaged through activities such as recovery block parties.

Their Foliage Folk Festival is Oct. 25 at the Hadlyme Public Hall.

Message from Bill O'Shaughnessy:

Here is the information regarding the Pot Luck Dinner, as mentioned by Mike Rafferty last meeting, to be held at the First Congregational Church in Old Lyme on Sunday July 28th at 5pm.  That is after our Old Saybrook Arts & Craft show closes.

This is a fund raiser (suggested $10) to help support the refugee family resettlement efforts. I'm hoping many of our Rotary members will also attend to meet the families and show our support. I plan on being there. I am hoping we can add this info to the Arts & Crafts sign up sheet at our luncheon meeting this Wednesday.
