Program: Alicia Farrell, PhD - Marijuana: Weeding out fact from fiction
Alicia has been working as a cognitive psychologist for 15 years. Alicia wants to give a sense of the enormity of the problem. In her practice parents often bring their children in. Some parents have a casual attitude because some of them used to or use marijuana themselves. They have an attitude of "I smoked and I turned out fine", don't want to set limits or are scared but don't know what to do. There are some facts concerning marijuana. Kids under 18 who smoke 4-6 times/wk, 3 times/day will have a 6 point drop in IQ  and its permanent. THC, the active drug in marijuana, can effect the frontal cortex of the brain and for pre-adolescents this is important because the frontal cortex is developing. Kids grow up having difficulty planning, setting goals, and haven't grown up.
The marijuana of today is much more potent than 20-30 years ago. Synthetic THC is sprayed on twigs and is very expensive. An ounce costs over $100. This gives rise to the concept that marijuana is a gateway drug. When people get addicted (which they definitely can), they seek a cheaper alternative usually heroin which is cheap and plentiful.
Alicia recommends you drug test your kids if you suspect they are using. This is becoming more commonplace today. Contact information:

From Gerri:
Good afternoon all. I just returned from a short vacation and it was good to get away.
Last week I told you that I saw Kirby Kloter.  He was having issues with his legs.  We're still waiting to hear from you, Kirby to let us know if you'll be coming back.  We're looking forward to it. Last week's program was Alicia Farrell and her talk was on Marijuana and the effects thereof.  If you missed it, it was a great program!  It's amazing what we learned!  She left some info with SAA Kathy, if you want to read it. ...AND Estuary staff, you are always welcome to come to hear our speakers.
Reminder:  The Chamber's annual EXPO  that we're participating in, is at the YMCA on Thursday, October 10th, from 5:30 - 7:00 P.M.  There is a reception for exhibitors from 4:30 - 5:30.  This is a great way to get the word out about our Rotary Club.  Bill O'Shaughnessy is going to bring info for the table and if anyone has anything we can display, kindly let me know and we'll get it on the table.  Amber, would love to have Interact kids/display, that would be great.  Thanks!*~^o^~ cheer
We (Jack Solomon) will be swearing in our 6th new member Jan Perruccio this Wednesday - Bill McLaughlin is her sponsor.  Please welcome Jan after the meeting.  We also have student of the month on Wednesday and the subject is English.   Stu, please plan for around 10 more people for breakfast.  Thanks.
On Wednesday, October 30th, we will be having our evening dinner meeting*^O^||3 eat So, mark your calendars folks.  Marty will be giving us a crash course on navigating our OS Rotary website at this meeting.  Thanks, Marty.  We voted and the majority of members voted for Luigi's.  Lenny is closing the "new area" downstairs where the bar is to give us that entire space.  So, if you haven't signed up for dinner, please do so soon so we can give Lenny a count.  Please see or email Glen who is putting this together for us.  Thanks, Glen!
We're really enjoying your breakfasts Stu, Kelly and Marilyn.   Great to be with you at The Estuary.*[]--- cook
