Program: Glen Anderson

Since joining the club, Glen has been active in the area of youth services. Today, he spoke about topics concerning the clubs support of these programs.

STUDENT OF THE MONTH is a long standing program run by Bill McLaughlin, Jan and Glen. The faculty and principals from the 3 area high schools pick the students in subject matter that changes monthly. You can see past winners on this same web page. Students are given $25 and the club makes a donation to Polio Plus in their names. We are changing the award formerly called "Music" to "Fine Arts" to broaden the scope of that award.

RYLA which stands for Rotary Youth Leadership Awards happens twice a year at Camp Hazen in Chester. Its all about leadership and getting out of your comfort zone. Our club has sent students for many years and they come away with valuable lessons. This year the attendees were divided into 9 "families" and were given the task of creating a community service project. The winning project was awarded $500. The cost per student is $350 and Camp Hazen has a capacity of 84 students. Glen said there was room for more and will be working with district to better publicize this program so more students take advantage of it.

WORLD AFFAIRS SEMINAR:
"Dedicated to the advancement of international goodwill and peace through a better understanding of global issues"
The World Affairs Seminar is a popular Rotary program and attracts high school seniors from around the world. The Rotary Old Saybrook sponsors 3 seniors to attend the World Affairs Seminar. This year, it was held at Carroll University in Wisconsin. The seminar provides many insights to these students and gives them an opportunity to listen to peers from around the globe. International understanding is what this program is all about and the students come away with knowledge that will stay with them all their lives. On Aug. 29 the club will hear from 2 recent attendees about their experience.

YOUTH EXCHANGE: Our club has participated in the past and led by John Donnelly, this year is no exception. Westbrook HS will be sending a student, Logan Muckle, to Columbia. Its expected that we host a student and help is needed to find host families. The need is urgent so if you know of a potential host family, please let John know.

Glen spoke of a new scholarship for college freshmen called the Service Above Self Scholarship. It is a $10K scholarship for domestic college and $30K for foreign colleges.
