Program: Last summer, OS Rotary, helped to fund a trip for OSHS students to Honduras in order to study the coral reefs in Roatan and Tela. Ten students presented a slide/video program that described their experiences on the 2 week excursion. Each student had to be SCUBA certified, participate in the reef study, and complete a research project. The reef study focused on the negative effects of the brown and green algae on the health of the coral reefs. Research projects and presentations to the scientists included a lion fish study and the importance of herbivores in the ecology of the reef. What did the students find most challenging? 5:00AM dives, rough boat trips, getting diver certified, and getting enough sleep. What was most enjoyable for the students? meeting new people, sunrises, snorkeling, reef exploration, night dives, group meetings, and doing actual scientific research. This trip takes place every 2 to 3 years and is open to any interested OSHS student. Amber Scherber not only organizes the trip but is also an active participant in all of the dives.
