Program: Valley Shore YMCA, presentation by Josh Macniven, Directory of Wellness and CEO Tony Sharillo

There have been a lot of changes at the Valley Shore YMCA! Today, they are more focused on health in ways that are much different. With investments in new programs, membership is robust with high participation in activities. There are 4 main programs:

  • Y-BE-FIT: This small group program helps adults with varying levels of physical and cognitive abilities learn the skills necessary to independently make healthy activity and nutritional choices.
  • DELAY THE DISEASE: This ongoing program helps those living with Parkinson’s Disease gain increased self-confidence, decrease risk of falls, minimized fatigue, reduce rigidity, and improve vocalization and hand-writing.
  • HOPE IS POWER: Hope is Power is a free, safe, fun program for adult cancer survivors of all ages and fitness levels. This 12 week program helps survivors improve overall health, connect with others, and overcome the de-conditioning and fatigue from cancer and its treatment.
  • RACE 4 CHASE: A FREE 6 week program aimed to provide youth aged 6 to 12 years of age with a fun, skill building and life changing experience by introducing them to the sport of triathlon.

The Y-BE-FIT programs focuses on cognitive behavior, community involvement, vocational training and more. Raising awareness for cardio health and healthy snacks is promoted. Delay the Disease helps those with Parkinson's Disease through exercise programs, strength training, motor skills and flexibility. There are lots of tools available including vocal work and facial expressions and the cost is only $55/mo. Hope is Power addresses those with cancer. Currently there are 15 members and 2 instructors. They meet Tue and Thu 5:30-7 and spend time at the pool, wellness center and can work at arts & crafts. Race-4-Chase is a youth triathlon program for ages 6-12. Its a free 6 week training program that stresses teamwork and supporting each other. They learn swimming, biking and in some cases are trained by world ranked athletes. The annual Spin-A-Thon March 30 benefits programs for cancer survivors, Parkinson's Disease and special needs.. You can sponsor a bike for $500 and support the Y. Financial support for membership is available. Go to Valley Shore YMCA to learn more about their programs.

ChiliFest: Nancy thanked everyone who took part for a great job on short notice. It came together very quickly! Nancy gave Dave Condren a ceremonial apron for his help getting the logistics of keeping the pots of chili hot. Great Job Dave! Nancy learned a lot and will wants another crack at winning the contest. We did well but couldn't compete with the voter turnout for other entries.

Marty reported on progress for the Wine & Beer Tasting and Silent Auction. We are starting to see items come in and sponsors signing up. We are up to about $12,500 in sponsors so far. With a month to go, its time to put our foot on the gas pedal and finalize sponsors, items and ticket sales. We would like to get items in by April 4!

John Aforismo will have a Shredding Day report on March 20.

Nancy will be attending PETS (President Elect Training Seminar) for 3 days tomorrow

This Monday, March 11 is the Rotary District dinner meeting at the Omni Hotel in New Haven. We have approved up to 5 officers fees to attend. If you'd like to attend, ask Nancy even if you aren't an officer.
