Happy Bucks: The majority were for students, teachers, parents, and administrators. Alan S for the Lottery Tree at the Wine Tasting Event. Jan P for her son who was accepted, with a full scholarship, into law school. Gary M for his granddaughter who will be attending a Summer Program at Yale. Devin C for the best students in the State of Connecticut! 

Student of the Month(s): Science and Technology Ed.

     Jan Perruccio, Superintendent of Schools, gave a brief history of the award and its link to the RI’s PolioPlus initiative. She then introduced the students, teachers, and administrators representing the three local high schools.

     Westbrook High School: Science; Addy Demmers. Principal, Tara Winch, and teacher, Metta Hoppes described Addy as a critical thinker who has not only taken every science course available but also excels in Field Hockey and Art. She also serves her community as an EMT. Addy certainly exemplifies Service above Self. She plans to attend St. Joseph’s and enroll in the P.A. Program. She will be successful because “she lives science”!

     Lyme/Old Lyme High School: Science; Duohui Yan.  Assistant Principal, Ms. Manfredi, and teacher, Mr. Lillie, described Lina as a passionate and happy student. She has taken eleven AP courses and earned many academic awards. She is the Captain of the Math Team and enjoys helping her classmates with their studies. Her other interests include the piano. In the classroom, Lina has proven to be a natural leader while exhibiting a genuine enthusiasm for learning. She plans to enroll in Dental School.

     Old Saybrook High School: Science; Parker Cook. Assitant Principal, David Plotkin, and teacher, Karen Dionne, described Parker as a self-directed student who actually motivates his classmates. He is a member of the NHS, AP Scholar, and has earned numerous national science awards. Parker is Captain of the Cross Country and Track teams and has earned Allstate recognition. His teachers are convinced that “he will save the Planet”! He will be attending Brandeis University where his goal is to “learn how to help people”.

     Lyme/Old Lyme High School: Technology Ed; John Holzworth. Assistant Principal, Ms. Manfredi, and teacher, Mr. Derry, described Jack as humble, dedicated to learning, insightful, kind, respectful, and positive. He serves his community as a firefighter and serves his school community as a painter during the summer months. In the classroom, Jack is the mastermind of projects that include designing and building an electric vehicle. He is known for his ability to create new things and never giving up on a project. He will be furthering his Fire Service career next year.

     Old Saybrook High School: Technology Ed; Patrick Sheahan. Assistant Principal, David Plotkin, and teacher, Gerry Carlone, described Patrick as an active and engaged leader in the school and the community. He is a member of the INTERACT Club, participated in the Maui Relief project, and is a volunteer fire fighter. His dedication, drive, and enthusiasm resulted in attaining the rank of Eagle Scout. In the classroom, Patrick is an expert welder as well as excelling in all of his classes. He leads the class in the right direction which results in “making the class better”.

Congratulations to all of the award winners and their parents.

Announcements:

     Marty updated the Wine Tasting Event. The deadline for auction items and sponsorships is April 4th. We need to sell more tickets!   

     Grant Committee: Cheryl Nadzam reported that they are in the process of applying for a District managed grant. The $5,000 matching grant will benefit the Connecticut Burns Foundation’s summer camp at Deer Lake in Killingworth.

     The District Dinner was held in New Haven at the Omni on March 11th. The Club sent Nathan, Nancy, Cheryl, and Tara as our representatives.

     Nancy and Jan attended the President Elect Training which focused on goal setting, DEI, and communication. More information to follow.

     The Rotary Day of Service in May will focus on our meeting site. “VFW Refresh” will give the facility a much needed facelift. More info to follow.

     John A will be emailing information about the Wine to Water event to be held at the Westbrook Elk’s Club on April 25th. This fundraiser will benefit the Uganda Well Initiative.
