Happy Bucks: For the students, teachers, administrators, and the parents. For the beautiful sunrise, Tory (Ed’s new best friend), all the wonderful people here this morning, the raffle winners, The Rotary Club, the dredging of the Marina (Chip is very pleased), and a Happy New Year to all. 

Program: Student of the Month - Science

     Ms. Tara Winch, Principal of Westbrook High School, presented a brief history of this Award, explained its connection with Polio Plus, and introduced the students, teachers, and administrators from each school.

                                             Lyme/Old Lyme High School: Ryan Shapiro

     Assistant Principal, Ms. Manfredi, and teacher, Mr. Fisler, described Ryan as a very intelligent and humble student. He is also a very capable leader as evidenced by his leadership roles. Ryan is president of the Chinese National Honor Society and captain of the Mock Trial Club. He is also a member the Model UN and the National Honor Society. Ryan exhibits a love of learning and discovery. According to Mr. Fisler, “one does not teach Ryan, you present the material and he immerses himself in the subject.” Ryan will be attending Columbia University and majoring Physics.

                                                 Old Saybrook High School: Talia Bauer

     Principal, Mr. Anastasio, and teacher, Ms. Dionne, described Talia as a student who excels at everything. She is a year round athlete, while also actively participating in Student Government, Model UN, INTERACT Club, and she attended the World Affairs Conference in Wisconsin this past summer. Talia is a strong and reliable leader. “Her goal is to make the world a better place”. A self-admitted “tree-hugger”, she is presently involved in organizing an overnight camping trip for the Ecology Club. Talia will be majoring in International Studies with a minor in Spanish.

                                               Westbrook High School: Ana Dias-Heringer

     Principal, Ms. Winch, and teacher, Ms. Bancroft, noted that Ana had already been selected as SOM for English. Congratulations! Ana is not only a two sport athlete but also involved in all the musical productions, and serves as the student representative on the Board of Education. She is a quiet leader in the classroom while always remembering to help others. Ana is fluent in three languages: English, Spanish, and Portuguese. According to Ms. Bancroft, Ana truly loves science, and “I know that she is going to successful. She will be a strong woman in science”. Ana plans on becoming a Dentist.

Announcements:

     Chili Fest is March 1st. The Club voted to pay the $50 registration fee and not sponsor the event. Sign up to volunteer on the sheet or contact Gail Fahey.

     Social Committee: If you plan on attending the January Social (1/29 at the Cuckoo’s Nest at 5:30), you must sign up with Gina. Gina@gmjohnson.co. The social committee is looking for a co-chair and new members. If interested, contact Nancy.

     Grants Committee: Cheryl N. reported that we received a matching District Grant for $2500 to help establish the Traveling Toy Library. May is the target date for the beginning of this project. Cheryl also updated the grant that was used this past summer for the Children’s Burn Camp at Deer Lake in Killingworth.

     Peace Pole: Rosanne reported on the progress of Peace Poles at the local high schools. Lyme/Old Lyme has one, Westbrook has one with the message ”Peace Begins Here”, and Old Saybrook is in the planning stage.

     The Brent Taylor Golf Classic will be held on September 8th at the Fox Hopyard Golf Club.

     Nathan Wise read the poem that he had written. It was an eloquent tribute to the Town of Old Saybrook. Thanks Nathan for such an uplifting message.
