Student of the Month: Technology

L-R: Matthew Izzo (Westbrook HS), Alexander Strausser (Old Saybrook HS), Caeli Edmond (Lyme-Old Lyme HS)

Tara Winch, principal of Westbrook High School, explained the history of the Award and its connection to the Rotary International’s PolioPlus Project. She then introduced the students, teachers, and administrators from each school district.

Lyme/Old Lyme High School: Caeli Edmond

Assistant principal Ms. Manfredi, and teacher, Mr. Derry, described Caeli as a scholar, a musician, and a passionate leader. As a member of the Spectrum Club, she and fellow classmates made a 45 minute presentation to the entire faculty about eradicating stereotypes in the school and community. Caeli is also the Captain of the Robotics Team. She dedicates 30 hours a week to this role during January through March. Mr. Derry commented that Caeli is the reason why he loves being a teacher and that she is well on her way to making the world a better place. She plans on studying Mechanical Engineering with a goal of being involved with robotics in the medical field.

Old Saybrook High School: Alexander Strausser

Principal, Mr. Anastasio, and teacher, Ms. Bell, noted that Alexander is receiving this award as a Junior due in large part to his amazing ability to understand a variety of computer languages and codes. He has successfully completed all of the computer courses including the challenging UConn Computer Science Course. In his spare time, Alexander is an accomplished musician and has mastered several instruments including the drums, the guitar, and the saxophone. He also has an interesting hobby. Using a screwdriver and pliers, he enjoys making chainmail armor. His college plans include studying music and computer science.

                                                     Westbrook High School: Matt Izzo

Ms. Winch and Teacher, Ms. Runkle, described Matt as the student with the biggest heart. He always puts others first and is the epitome of Service Above Self. He is a quiet but an extremely effective leader. In fact, Ms. Winch stated that if anything happened to her, Matt could take over and run the entire school without a problem. Matt has become an accomplished videographer using his talents to highlight the entire Westbrook School System. He also has developed an interest in managing the light and sound for several WHS theater productions. Next year, Matt will be attending the University of Connecticut and plans to study Digital Media and Design.

Agenda:

Jan P., Pete Z., and Nancy M. provided a recap of the three day PELS training that they attended in Framingham, MA. They learned that our Club is functioning at a high level and that we lead the way with new members. How to keep a Club vital and retention of members were among other topics discussed.

Wine Tasting/Silent Auction: Marty and Pete will be meeting with SPI later today to review details of the event. Pete is in charge of the auction. If you have items, you must fill out the appropriate form and send it to Pete. The big push is on for ticket sales and sponsorships.

The Club voted to decline the President’s Circle opportunity from the Chamber of Commerce due, in part, to the $5000.00 annual fee.

Joan W. explained that this year’s Epic Day of Service will be on May 17th. The Club will be running a Food Drive in all three towns from 10:00am until 2:00pm. Collection sites include: Westbrook Town Green, Old Lyme Firehouse, Big Y/Stop & Shop in Old Saybrook. We need volunteers! See Joan W. if available.

Changing of the Guard will take place at 6:00pm on June 11th at the Old Lyme Art  Association.

Next Meeting: VFW Noon on March 19th.  Speaker: O.S. School Superintendent, Chris Drezek.
