Happy Bucks: The vast majority were happy for the students, teachers, administrators, and parents. Shelia Riffle, principal of OSHS, was happy for the next 5 months of the SOM program. Several parents were happy that the Rotary was involved in recognizing educational achievement.
Student of the Month: Mathematics
Superintendent Jan Perruccio welcomed everyone and reviewed the criteria of the Student of the Month award. She also explained the connection of the award to the Rotary’s International Polio Plus program.

Westbrook High School: Julia Farnoli. Principal Tara Winch and teacher Patrick Hanssen described Julia as a student who is at the top of her class. Not only this year, but she was ranked as the top student in each of her four years at WHS. She not only excels on the soccer field and the tennis court but has demonstrated compassion for those with health challenges. Julia organized “Team Up for Treatment”, a fundraiser for those suffering from ovarian cancer. At the present time, Julia is serving as an EMT in Westbrook. She plans to enter the medical field and eventually help people in underdeveloped countries.
Old Saybrook High School: Maxwell Brown. Principal Shelia Riffle and teacher Kristen Souza described Maxwell as a humble and helping student with a huge heart. He brings a lot of energy to the classroom where he serves as a valuable resource as well as a welcomed helper to his classmates. Combining his problem solving ability with his desire to help others, Maxwell’s senior project is designing and building Pollinator Gardens at OSHS. He plans to study mechanical engineering while attending college next Fall.
Lyme/Old Lyme High School: Nikolai Stephens-Zumbaum. Assistant Principal Jeanne Manfredi and teacher Kirk Kaczor described Nikolai as a true scholar and an involved student leader. He is a well-rounded student who speaks three languages, is a member of the band and the math team. He uses his leadership skills while serving as a member of the Student Advisory Council. He has always had high expectations for himself as well as his classmates. Nikolai has plans to study Aerospace or Environmental Engineering next year.

Wine and Beer Tasting – February 18, 2022. Tickets are printed and will be available along with a packet of WT material for everyone next week. ($40) Contact sponsors and arrange for raffle prizes and auction items.
SPI will not be available for the Student of the Month meetings in January, February, and March. If schools agree, the meetings will be held on Thursday instead of Wednesday.
Bill Tait, from Essex Financial, will speak at the 11/17/2021 meeting.
Outreach – the Club voted to support the OSHS INTERACT Club’s Frosty Five 5K on December 4th with a $500 donation and a promise to help on the day of the run. The Club also voted to support the Bikes for Kids Polar Express Event with a donation of $1000.
