Happy Bucks: Many for the students, teachers, and administrators. Several for Devin Carney’s reelection, the excellent day, and the Rotary Club. Pete was happy for his daughter’s recent marriage and Charlie N. was happy that even though his alarm went off at 6:55, he was still able to make it to the meeting.

Student of the Month: Mathematics

     Principal, Tara Winch, gave a brief history of the award and then introduced the students, teachers and the administrators.

     Lyme/Old Lyme High School: Simon Karpinski

Assistant Principal, Ms. Manfredi, and teacher, Ms. Leen, described Simon as a student who has demonstrated leadership, scholarship, and a willingness to help others. Simon has served as Class Vice President during his four years at L/OL High School. He is Captain of the track team as well as a member of the State Champion Mock Trial Team. He has earned many scholastic awards and continues to help his classmates while also serving as a Math tutor. Simon has been a member of the Math Team since he was in the sixth grade. Simon thanked his teachers for putting up with his “nerdary”. He plans on majoring in Political Science next year.

     Old Saybrook High School: Julia Pineau

Principal, Mr. Anastasio, and teacher, Ms. Leen, described Julia as a student recognized as a National Merit Scholar as well as an active participant in the school community. She is involved in the school’s production of 12 Angry Jurists and participates in Kate’s Camp during the summer. Julia can be found helping others in the Math Lab or tutoring her classmates whenever they need help. She has earned many Math Awards while taking the most challenging AP courses. She writes for the school newspaper and has demonstrated a flair for the Arts. Julia will be studying Civil Engineering in the Fall.

     Westbrook High School: Emily Bonner

Principal, Ms.Winch, and teacher, Ms.Rickaby, described Emily as a “quiet powerhouse”. She has earned High Honors since sixth grade. She has successfully completed six AP courses and also is a valuable member of the Tennis Team, the Choir, and numerous musicals. In the classroom, Emily is noted for her problem solving abilities, her willingness to help others, and her enthusiasm. Emily is an excellent role model for the entire school community. Next year, Emily plans on a Major in Environmental Science.

Outreach: The Club voted to donate $500 to Old Saybrook Social Services for funding Senior Citizen Art Classes.

Announcements:

     There will be a New Members Meeting on 12/3 at the Acton Library at 10:00AM.

     No regular meeting on 11/20. Instead, there will be a Paul Harris Awards Dinner at 5:30PM at the Old Lyme Country Club.

     We will be participating in the Torch Light Parade on 12/14. See Marty if you would like to volunteer. Gary will be heading up the collections of baked goods.

     So far, we have collected over $500 in Happy Bucks for this year’s Turkey Drive.

     Gary is looking for volunteers to help package and/or deliver Thanksgiving Meals on 11/27 in Westbrook. See Gary for details.

Next Meeting is December 4th at the Estuary.
