Bill Suits talked about the Outreach Committee. Bill was surprised to find out how difficult it is to give money away. The budget for 2009 is about $15,000. Money is provided for a multitude of needs ranging from handicapped ramps to heating fuel assistance. Money is never given directly to the recipient but rather to the provider of the goods or services. Lee David is in charge of Westbrook and Bill O'Schaughnessy, Old Lyme. Bill Bernhart talked about monies allocated to date. The committee is open to anyone.
Keith announced there will be a Board meeting next week, details to follow.

Program: Community Music School
Joan Camire introduced our speaker, Patricia Hurley who is the Director and brass instructor. The Community Music School has provided private music lessons for children and adults for 25 years and has grown to 4 locations. Students come from the MIddletown and the Valley Shore area. The main location is Centerbrook and when a large class meets, the Old Saybrook High School is used. Tuition is $33 per half hour. The school offers many sessions mornings and afternoons. There are 10 week blocks for adults at a cost of just $25. There is Jazz in July, Rock Week, Summer Guitar Workshops, Quick-Start Ukulele Workshops and more. The school is excited to announce plans for formation of the New Horizons Band of the Connecticut Valley Shore in October. The New Horizons Band concept was introduced in Rochester NY in 1991 by Roy Ernst of the Eastman Conservatory. Today there are 140 New Horizons bands, choruses an orchestras in the US and Canada. These organizations provide an entry point for adults who have either never studied music or who have been away from it for many years allowing them to share the joyful experience of recreational music making. The school receives funding from the state and private foundations.
