John Donnelly introduced Mrs. Susan Allison, mother of one of our presenters
who then introduced the 3 girls presenting.Program: "Caitlin's Closet". Caitlin Desmarais is a senior at Mercy High School in Middletown who started a program a few years ago to provide uniforms to schools in town and villages in Africa. The girls collect the uniforms being turned in at the end of the school year or older uniforms being replaced, wash or dry clean them and prepare them for shipment to the third world countries. They also have been able to recieve unifroms from some uniform companies that are producing newer uniforms. In their first year they sent 110 uniforms to Zambia. They did several fundraisers to raise the $980 it cost to ship.
This year they collected over 2000 unifroms and expect shipping costs to approximate $2400. Their program will be expanding to Haiti and Ghana. They also have shipped uniforms to the Hartford school system and to NYC. There was lots of discussion as to how to lower the shipping costs and Keith was going to meet with the girls after the meeting to make some suggestions. All in all this is a great service project and the girls are to be commended on their activities and are worthy of our support & consideration asl
